Segments[]
Live-action[]
The live-action segments are short skits that open and close each episode of the show. The original segments focus on Mario and Luigi, played by former wrestler Lou Albano and actor Danny Wells respectively as they go about their daily lives in their basement plumbing shop in Brooklyn, New York, where in each segment they would be joined by a guest star, typically a celebrity at the time, like Nicole Eggert or Shabba Doo. In 1990, these live-action segments were replaced with entirely new ones in a new form of the show called Club Mario, replacing Mario and Luigi with two Mario-obsessed teenagers called Tommy Treehugger and Co-MC, played by Chris Coombs and Michael Rawlins respectively.

Production[]
DiC CEO Andy Heyward spent about a year about trying to convince Nintendo to license the characters. In a interview with Heyward, he said "the Super Mario Bros is such a unique property, we had to do it in a different way. We want to do a cartoon but also do a show that extended beyond the cartoon."
In February 1989, the show was announced to be released in September 1989.

Trivia[]
- This is the first Super Mario Bros. cartoon, as well the first one to be created by DiC.
- Mario, Luigi and Princess Toadstool are the only characters to appear in every episode.
- This is the only DiC Mario show not to feature the Koopalings which makes sense since the show is based on the original Super Mario Bros. game and Super Mario Bros. 2 as well as the fact that Super Mario Bros. 3 was not released outside of Japan until the early 1990s.
- Even though the Super Mario franchise originated from Japan, its unknown if this series (alongside its two succesors) was localized in Japan or not.
- There was a View-master three-reel set based on the show (but labeled as Super Mario Bros. 2). The ''A" reel showed various scenes from the live-action segments, while the ''B'', and "C" reels show scenes from the first episode but are redrawn with more accurate designs. and even have Wart (who is the main antagonist of Super Mario Bros. 2/Doki Doki Panic) instead of King Koopa (despite the pictures descriptions saying it's King Koopa instead of Wart). This suggests that the scenes in the ''B'', and ''C'' reels are actually concept art, and Wart was originally going to appear in the show, however, other rumours suggest that those pictures of Wart are screenshots from a possible lost pilot episode of the show.[14][15]
